Tableau alternative for small teams
arcodash is a Tableau alternative for small teams that work in SQL and want checks and alerts built in. It is fixed at $59 or $300 per month for the whole org depending on plan, with unlimited seats and no usage billing. Tableau Cloud is priced per user by role, so the bill moves with headcount. Tableau is the stronger tool for visual, drag-and-drop exploration and polished dashboards.

Who each one is for
Tableau is a visual analytics product. Analysts connect to data, drag fields onto a canvas and build views, then publish them to Tableau Cloud for others. It has a deep chart range, strong dashboard design tools and a long track record in larger organisations.
arcodash is for a small team that works in SQL. You write queries, chart them, assemble dashboards, and put scheduled checks and alerts on the same queries. It is hosted only, fixed at $59 or $300 per month for the whole org depending on plan, with unlimited viewers.
How the pricing differs
Tableau Cloud is variable: you pay per user, by role (Creator, Explorer or Viewer), billed annually, and every deployment needs at least one Creator. Add a person, or promote a Viewer to Creator, and the bill moves. Standard allows up to 3 sites and Enterprise up to 10. Cloud+ and the Tableau+ bundle are contact sales.
arcodash is fixed: $59 or $300 a month for the whole org depending on plan, unlimited seats, no usage billing. The price on the page is the bill. Your own mix of roles decides how Tableau’s side behaves as you grow.
Where Tableau is the better choice
- Visual exploration. Dragging fields to find a pattern is faster than writing SQL for many people and many questions. arcodash is SQL-first and asks you to write the query.
- Chart range and dashboard design. Tableau gives fine control over layout, interactivity and storytelling. arcodash dashboards are tidy, not designer-grade.
- Non-SQL users. If most of your analysts live in spreadsheets and not SQL, Tableau fits them. arcodash would make them depend on whoever writes queries.
- Governance at scale. Sites, projects and published data sources suit larger organisations with many teams. arcodash has organisations and roles, and that is it.
- Hosting choice. Tableau runs as Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server. arcodash is hosted only and not self-hostable.
If your team builds dashboards by dragging fields, keep Tableau.
Where arcodash fits
- SQL-first. The SQL editor is the main surface, and every chart is a query you can read.
- Checks and alerts built in. A check is a scheduled SQL query; a monitor alerts when its result crosses a condition. See data quality monitors for freshness, volume and validity patterns.
- Fixed price, unlimited viewers. Sharing a dashboard with the whole company doesn’t add a licence line.
- Small-team pace. 14 days free with no card, then you email to convert.
Alerts, compared concretely
Per Tableau’s help page, data-driven alerts work on dashboards and views with a continuous numeric axis. Any chart type qualifies except Gantt charts and maps, and numeric bins and discrete numeric axes are not supported. You set a threshold on the axis, and notifications go by email, to your Tableau site, or to Slack through the Tableau for Slack app. They run on Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server. Anyone with access to a view can see and join alerts others created.
arcodash alerts attach to a saved query. A monitor reads one column of the first row of the latest result and compares it with >, <, >=, <=, == or !=, or uses a baseline that learns normal from recent history. It re-checks whenever the query refreshes and notifies on a state change, to email, Slack, Teams, webhook, PagerDuty, Mattermost, Discord, Google Chat or Datadog. See the alerts overview and notification destinations.
The difference is what you can watch. A Tableau alert watches a mark on a chart. An arcodash check can watch a table directly, such as a freshness query that returns the seconds since the newest row in orders, with a monitor that fires when that number passes three hours.
Moving over
There is no import tool. Workbooks, published data sources, calculated fields and dashboards are not converted. You rewrite each view you still need as a SQL query.
- List the views people opened in the last quarter. Drop the rest.
- Rewrite each as SQL against the source. Calculated fields become expressions in the query.
- Rebuild dashboards from those queries.
- Add freshness and volume checks on the underlying tables.
- Run both side by side, then end Tableau licences at your renewal date.
Because Tableau is billed annually, check your term before you plan a cut-over.

Questions
How is Tableau Cloud priced?
Per user, by role (Creator, Explorer, Viewer), billed annually, and every deployment needs at least one Creator. Cloud+ and the Tableau+ bundle are contact sales. The bill moves with how many people you add and which role each one holds. arcodash is fixed: $59 or $300 per month for the whole org, depending on plan.
Do Tableau viewers have to pay?
Yes. A Viewer is a paid per-user licence, so sharing a dashboard with more people adds to the bill. In arcodash, viewers are free and unlimited.
Can arcodash open my Tableau workbooks?
No. There is no import tool, and workbooks, data sources and calculated fields are not converted. You rewrite each view as a SQL query.
Is arcodash better than Tableau?
For visual exploration and polished dashboards, no. Tableau is stronger there. arcodash is a better fit when the work is SQL queries with checks and alerts on top, for a small team.
